About us

What is Pub Jiving?

JDK Pub Jiving provides an opportunity for people of all ages to learn to dance Rock'n Roll / Jive, best known as "Pubjive", in a relaxed, fun environment.

JDK runs eight social dance classes each week (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday), teaching people, often with the proverbial "two left feet", how to dance.

Our focus is on teaching "social" dancing leaving out the "strictly ballroom" stuff, but more importantly teaching people to laugh when mistakes are made.

If, you complete a six week set of lessons and still can't dance BUT have a smile on your face then we've been successful!

Bring a partner if you prefer, although it is not necessary as many single people attend regularly. Male to female ratios are usually even. This is complimented with rotating partners at regular intervals, providing greater chance of sharing experienced dancers.

...just come along and enjoy meeting lots of new people, enjoy the music and the exercise!

Beginner Classes

We take new people into the beginners classes until week three, you can join in after week three, only if you've danced before.

JDK Beginners classes cater for the complete beginner up to mid-level social dancing.

Most people feel they have 'two left feet'...
Society has conditioned us to expect instant gratification and we want to be a proficient dancer after one lesson - NOT possible! (...but we will have you dancing)

Being self-conscious, we also tend to judge ourselves more harshly than we judge others. At JDK no one has expectations of your ability. WE EXPECT YOU TO HAVE A GOOD TIME

There is always someone better than you and always someone worse than you and WHO CARES ANYWAY RIGHT?

...enjoy the music, enjoy the people and enjoy the exercise!

We recommend you complete at least two six week courses of ‘Beginners’ classes before moving into Improvers. As we teach different moves in each new course, we recommend you continue doing Beginners classes as well as Improvers - remember, the cost for the lessons is per night not per class.

The best dancers in our ‘Improvers’ classes still join in the Beginners classes too.

Improvers classes

Classes for people wanting to be challenged with more difficult moves. Most people participating in the Improvers classes still do the beginners classes, just for the warm up or simply for the fun and to meet the new people and help them up to speed. (But please don't overwhelm them by trying to impress them with every move you know).

Remember, the cost for the lessons is per night not per class.

Some people feel the step up from beginners to improvers is too big. To give yourself a head start, we have a few suggestions: Before attempting the Improvers class, complete at least two beginners courses, then on week six stay for the new move to be taught in Improvers (the move we teach in Improvers on week six is repeated on week one of the next set). Be sure to only do the part of the lesson where the new move is taught, this way you'll have some insight on the move for the next week.

TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE - SORRY

NEW INTERACTIVE JDK INFORMATION LINE

Our new interactive JDK information line is now up and running! Now you can call one phone number (08 XXXX XXXX) and find out information about what week we are currently on, news bulletins, when the next course begins, details about venues and upcoming events, and much more – all at the press of a button! (or two). Please bear in mind it is still being tweaked for maximum performance. So please inform us only of major problems (that’s very unlikely).

If you try calling the number & get a busy signal, it is most likely that someone else is on the system. Please give us feedback simply by leaving a message that you had to try ‘x’ number of times before connecting, we might need to consider connecting another line.

Below is a summary of the menu options – now when you call up, you can immediately enter the numbers required to get you to the information you want (e.g. If you want to know about the Tuesday venue, simply press “2” – “3” – “2” to go straight to that information.).
